Last week Frank Iler was sworn into the N.C. House of Representatives as a replacement for Bonner Stiller. He assumes responsibilities for House District 17 that serves Brunswick County.
With Iler’s background in regional politics, we’re hopeful he has a good foundation on which to start the long journey ahead.
Iler joins the General Assembly at a difficult time. It’s a time when senators and representatives must find great resolve in listening to the will of the state’s people while enduring difficult financial times.
We encourage Iler, as he begins his tenure, to be certain to now and always stay in touch with the people back home in Brunswick County. Find forums, venues and other ways to keep in touch with constituents. Listen to what they have to say, think hard, gather information and do the best you can every day in your new job.
We encourage you to pay close attention to all proposals for tax increases and to do your best to lighten burdens for North Carolina citizens. Be diligent in spending, not only in these tough economic times but always.
Always read the fine print. Like Stiller suggested, always look for the motivation pushing a bill through government. Who is supporting the measure? Why is it important? How much will it cost to fund and where is the money going to come from? What does each and every decision mean to the people here in Brunswick County and throughout the rest of the state?
Best of luck in your new role and may the promises you made when appointed be the first of many promises you keep.
