A tagged great white shark has been tracked off the coast in Brunswick County.
The 16-foot-long adult shark, named Mary Lee, is being tracked by the Global Shark Tracker for Ocearch, a nonprofit ocean research group.
Mary Lee weighs 3,456 pounds and was first tagged at Cape Cod, Mass., on Sept. 17 and then released.
Since then, she has journeyed along the East Coast, traveling south toward Florida in October and November before heading back north in the Atlantic Ocean.
Wednesday, she was tracked in the ocean off the coast of Sunset Beach and North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Mary Lee is named for the mother of Ocearch expedition leader and founding chairman Chris Fischer.
“My parents have done so much. I was waiting and waiting for a special shark to name after her, and this is truly the most historic and legendary fish I have ever been a part of and it set the tone for Cape Cod,” Fischer is quoted on the Ocearch web site.
