South Brunswick senior Carmen Hilliard ran to a 10-place finish and earned all-state honors in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state cross-country meet Saturday at Beeson Park in Kernersville.
Hilliard ran the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 0.83 seconds. The race had 130 runners in it.
In the team competition, Gibbons and Chapel Hill were one-two, with the Crusaders winning their third straight title with 31 points to 74 for Chapel Hill. Waxhaw Marvin Ridge took third with 100 points.
Gibbons had a great performance, with five runners in the top 13 scoring positions and all seven finishing 28th or better, led by junior Mary Grace Doggett.
Doggett took the individual crown in a time of 18:02.82, fewer than five seconds ahead of freshman Gibbons teammate Sophia Ebihara. Natalie Andrejchak of Concord Jay Robinson was third.
In the boys’ race, South sophomore Grant Hufham finished 78th out of in 131 runners in 17:38.11. The winning time was 15:28.30.
Bailey Lawson, 10, ran Sunday in Greensboro in the USATF North Carolina Association Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships and finished fifth in the 3-kilometer race in 12 minutes, 3 seconds. The finish advanced her to the regionals Nov. 17 in Georgia.
