South Brunswick senior Carmen Hilliard ran to a seventh-place finish Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A East Regional cross-country meet in Wilson.
Hilliard ran the 3.1-mile course in 20 minutes, 36 seconds. Blake Dodge, of West Carteret, won the race in 19:52. She was the only runner out of 117 runners to finish quicker than 20 minutes.
South junior Ashley Sloup, running in the race two days before she plays in the Class 3A state golf tourney, finished 21st in 22:03.
West Brunswick’s top finisher was Shelly Chavis, 38th in 23:04. No other county runners finished in the top 50.
In the boys’ race, South’s Grant Hufham was seventh in 17:20. The winning time was 16:05 and four runners ran quicker than 17 minutes.
South’s Thomas Eichorn was 24th in 18:17.
West Brunswick’s top runner was Spencer Waters, 38th in 18:41. Gray Cheers was 40th in 18:43.
No other county runners finished better than 50th in the race of 148 runners. The South team finished seventh and West’s team finished ninth.
In the Class 2A East Regionals in Winterville, North junior Kelly Heyer was 26th in 22:46. In the boys’ race, junior Edwin Camacho was 52nd in 19:52.
