Hilliard, Minor second in state indoor track and field meet

In a thrilling finish, South Brunswick junior Carmen Hilliard was second to West Carteret sophomore Blake Dodge by 0.03 seconds the 1,600-meter run Saturday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 1A/2A/3A indoor state track and field meet at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse at UNC Chapel Hill.
Hilliard finished in 5:09.57. Dodge won in 5:09.54.
In the 1,000-meter run, Hilliard finished 10th in 3:14.12. The winning time was 3:08.46. Ashley Sloup was 20th in 3:22.94 in the 29-runner field.
In the shot put, sophomore Colin Minor was second with a put of 50 feet, 10.5 inches. The winning mark was 52-3.50 inches by Northside junior James Rowland.
In the boys’ 1,600-meter run, senior Dominic Cunliffe was seventh in 4:37.47. The winning time was 4:31.28.
In the 500-meter run, South senior Sam Johnson was 19th in 1:11.70. The winning time was 1:07.36.
In the 3,200 relay, Sloup, sophomore Lindsey Welch, freshman Mariah Thorpe and sophomore Nicole Minnix were 21st in 11:04.75. The winning time was 9:49.34.

12th at state swim meet
The South Brunswick boys’ 200 freestyle relay had the Cougars’ highest finish Feb. 9 in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state swimming and diving championships at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary
Stephen Seeber, Avery Oliver, Brian Atack and Myles Williams were 12th in 1 minute, 36.83 seconds. The winning time was 1:29.45.
In the 200 medley relay, Seeber, Nic Reschly, Brian Atack, Myles Williams were 16th in 1:53.28. The winning time was 1:39.35.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Seeber, Nic Reschly, Atack and Williams were 17th in 3:39.74. The winning time was 3:15.98
In the 100 breaststroke, Reschly was 20th in 1:09.09. The winning time was 59.92.
Atack was 21st in the 100 butterfly in 59.13. Seeber was 24th in 1:00.08. The winning time was 51.37.
Williams was 22nd in the 100 freestyle in 53.23. The winning time was 46.71.
In the girls’ meet, South’s 400 freestyle relay of Rachel Van Noordt, Mackenzie Jones, Morgan Gilbert and Sarah Shepard were 19th in 4:11.68. The winning time was 3:28.68.
In the 200 medley relay, Shepard, Beasley, Gilbert and Van Noordt were 20th in 2:07.42. The winning time was 1:46.56.
Gilbert, Jones, Brooke Beasley and Van Noordt were 23rd in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:56.81. The winning time was 1:37.05.
Shepard was 17th in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 1:05.65. The winning time was 56.09. In the 100 backstroke, she was 20th in 1:06.75. The winning time in the preliminaries was 57.62.
Van Noordt was 24th in the 100 freestyle in 1:00.65. The winning time was 50.55.
