Hopkins, Guerra win Winding River Men’s Golf Association tournament

The annual Winding River Men’s Golf Association member-member tournament was played May 5-6 at Carolina National Golf Club. Using a shotgun start both days, 96 players (48 teams) teed it up May 5 for the first of five matches.
Eight flights, with six teams per flight, played a nine-hole match against each of the other teams. The winner  of each flight then played three more holes, on the seventh through ninth holes at the Heron Course, to determine the overall member-member champion. The winning team was Ori Guerra and Jim Hopkins, who had three net birdies totaling nine shots and beat two other teams, who finished with 11 shots.
Flight winners: No. 1: Richard Curwen and Tom Goodwin. No. 2: John Hadenchuk and Dave Nay. No. 3: Bob Hull and Jim Trickett. No. 4: Gene Pessetto and Ken Jackson. No. 5: Dan Tacinelli and Dave Childers. No. 6: Ori Guerra and Jim Hopkins. No. 7: Phil Sloat and Rick Gutierrez. No. 8: Richard Holcomb and Ed Shea.
Two golfers had noteworthy rounds. On May 5, Bob Allen shot a personal-best gross-score 67. Curwen, playing from the gold tees (the longer course), made six birdies and shot a 67. His golfing partner, Goodwin, shot a respectable 74.
This was one of the first tournaments played under the new ownership of Traditional Golf Properties.
