Ed Baran, grandfather of fifth-grader Emily Baran at Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School, is presented with an official U.S. flag and a paper flag built by the class during the school’s Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
The Relay team sold 23 flags and each was dedicated to a special person in memory or in honor of someone who has/had cancer. Ed Baran told the class as long as you had support, you could get through anything and the students had great support at Jessie Mae.
The Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School’s Relay for Life Team raised $7,678 for the Brunswick County Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. One of the many ways the JMM RFL team raised money was by “building flags.”
Each classroom was given a paper flag kit to use to build their flag. Once the students had purchased all the stars and stripes for $1 each to complete their flag, they had enough money to buy a large U.S. flag that was displayed at the Relay for Life event.
Fran Thomas, parent/volunteer program facilitator, was the team captain for JMM.
