West Brunswick’s Josh Johnson won three events and qualified for the regionals in the 100 meters and the 200 meters in a track meet March 5 at Laney.
West’s boys finished third in the four-team meet that also included Ashley and White Oak.
Johnson also won the 400 meters.
“An outstanding meet for our sprinters, with Josh Johnson leading the way,” coach Yogi Hickman said. “I have never seen anyone win those three events in a single meet before.
West had one other winner, Dylan Bowman in the discus.
“Good performances in the field events as well,” Hickman said. “Our relay teams had some bad luck, and we feel like both the 4x100 and 4x200 teams have potential to be regional and state qualifiers.”
West’s girls finished fourth in one of its best meets since 2007.
“Our girls team showed a great deal of potential for the first meet,” Hickman said. “We were very proud of how they competed. All of them improved upon their practice times by a great deal. As they continue to work, I think we will continue to see significantly better times and distances from them.
“The majority of our girls are freshmen and sophomores, and they scored more points than we have scored in a girls’ meet since the 2007 season. So they have a reason to be excited.”
