K-9 Enforcement Team round-up

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office recently launched its newest law enforcement initiative, the K-9 enforcement team.

The team, comprised of five K-9 officers and their dogs, is similar to the sheriff’s office community policing program, which targets areas with high crime and drug activity, but the K-9 enforcement team is its own patrol division.

The K-9 enforcement team answers calls, conducts driver’s license checkpoints and assists with other agencies when K-9s are needed.

Officers with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Enforcement Team answered 33 calls last week, issued 11 citations and 19 total charges. Officers conducted eight driver’s license checkpoints and made nine drug arrests.

K-9 officers targeted the following areas between Sept. 1-7: U.S. 17, Sunset Harbor, Gary Street, N.C. 211, Middle River, McMilly Road, the Quarters, Stevenson Road, Cedar Hill, Seashore Road, Turkey Trap Road, Kirby Road, Dutchman Acres, Navassa and Hale Swamp Road.

Officers issued the following citations and charged the following suspects:

•Melinda J. Shough, 33, of 2283 Camellia Drive, Supply; charged with felony possession of cocaine, simple possession of a schedule IV controlled substance, driving while license revoked and driving left of center.

•Juan Ortiz Gomez, 33, of Gordon Street, Supply; charged with simple possession of a schedule IV controlled substance.

•Robert York, of 115 NE 20th St., Oak Island; charged with driving while impaired and driving while license revoked.

•Mark Wilson Davis, 38, of 837 Magnolia Drive, Sunset Beach; charged with possession of ounce or less of marijuana, intoxicated and disruptive, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

•Robert Wayne Shook Jr., 32, of 2622 Penny St. SW, Supply; cited for driving while license revoked.

•Christopher Shawn Evans, 19, of 599 Sabbath Home Road, Supply; cited for no driver’s license.

•William Riley Lewis, 61, of 1186 Gary Drive SE, Bolivia; cited for open container.

•Jacky Lubland Hewett II, 28, of 2126 Midway Road, Bolivia; cited for open container.

•Douglas Aubrey Bartlett, 32, of 5440 Sparrow St. SW, Ocean Isle Beach; cited for driving while license revoked.

•Tammy M. Moloney, 44, of 2726 Ocean View Ave., cited for driving while license revoked and failing to move for an emergency vehicle.

•William Riley Lewis, 61, of 1186 Gary Drive, Bolivia; cited for failing to stop at a stop sign.

•Jaquin Kymane Bethea, 38, of 800 McMilly Road, Shallotte; cited for driving while license revoked.

•Matthew Deante Hewett, 24, of 1803 Turkey Trap Road, Supply; cited for driving while license revoked and failing to stop at a stop sign.

•Maverick Henry Pate, 17, of 2598 Bessemer Drive SW, Supply; cited for expired inspection.

•Sumona Jade Randolph, 25, of 299 Randolphville Road NE, Bolivia; cited for no driver’s license.
