Keep those shows coming

Last weekend's Brunswick County Idol at the Odell Williamson Auditorium was a treat, with some of the county's most talented singers belting it out for fun and the chance at a cash prize.

The Teen Idol winner was 16-year-old Terriq White, who sang an emotional, beautiful version of Luther Vandross' "Here and Now," in his second attempt at the title.

The adult competition winner was Michael Clemmons, who, believe it or not, had only practiced his version of "I am Changing" from "Dreamgirls" the day before.

The show was not without its problems, however. Before the final Teen Idol contestant (the last before the intermission) could sing, the fog machine caused the building's smoke detector to go off, giving everyone an uncomfortable, unwanted early intermission.

And one terrific yet unlucky performer, Melody Melanson, who was full of energy and old-time rock-and-roll, had to wait what felt like an eternity for someone to get her music right.

Luckily, they allowed her to perform her terrific version of "Great Balls of Fire" again, this time without any CD skips or problems.

The problems were easily forgiven, however, with the caliber of talent on that stage Saturday night. I don't know how the judges made their decisions, but the two winners definitely deserved their awards.

Next month, the auditorium will be the site of another fun show featuring local talent. Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity will present its Third Annual Senior Follies at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8 and at 2 p.m., Sunday Nov. 9.

This show features talent from Brunswick County including singers, dancers and entertainers, all of whom are 55 years old and older.

The show was a resounding success in 2006 and 2007, organizers said, and they are hoping for even bigger attendance this year.

Proceeds from the follies will benefit Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity, which helps provide homes for low-income families in Brunswick County.

Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $7 for children younger than 12.

Tickets may be purchased at the following locations:

• Odell Williamson Box Office 755-7416 or Tickets@bccowa.com (these tickets can be charged to MC or Visa).
