Shaquitta Jones blocked a shot with 24 seconds left and Kiandra Long made two free throws with 17.8 seconds left as the Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat Catawba Valley Community College 62-56 Sunday afternoon.
The victory on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness and Aquatics Center avenged an 87-54 defeat earlier this season and improved BCC’s record to 7-8.
Jones scored 19 points and Danielle Blunt 13. Other BCC scorers: Chelsea McGowan 10, Julia Crews 8, Long 7, Cassie Harrell 3, Emily Schweer 2.
BCC led for most of the game but was unable to pull ahead for good. A basket by McGowan tied the score 45-45 with 10 minutes, 30 seconds left and began an 8-0 run. Jones, Schweer and McGowan scored in the run, which put BCC ahead 51-45.
BCC had a 59-55 lead with 3:18 and a free throw by Kiandra Long made the score 60-55.
A turnover and four missed free throws by BCC gave CVCC a chance to win the game. But with the score 60-56 and 24 seconds left, Jones blocked a shot. CVCC then fouled Long, and she made the two free throws to clinch the victory.
Crews hit back-to-back 3-pointers and two free throws in giving the Lady Dolphins a 19-8 lead with 10:22 left in the first half.
A jump shot by Long gave BCC a 27-17 lead, and a putback by Harrell left put BCC ahead 33-23 with about 30 seconds left. Catawba scored the final 4 points of the half.
BCC MEN LOSE
The BCC men’s basketball team fell behind 40-27 early in the second half to Aiken Tech and was unable to recover as it lost 67-63 Sunday night.
The Aiken victory avenged a BCC 71-65 victory earlier this year at Aiken.
For BCC (15-7), Lattrell Royster scored 16 points, Steve Johnson 13 and Alan-Michael Thompson 12.
A layup by Smith-Taylor cut the Aiken lead to 54-50, but the Knights hit two 3-pointers in taking a 60-52 lead.
Two free throws by Royster and a 3-pointer by Johnson cut the Aiken lead to 62-57. A free throw by BCC’s Terneil Rhodes and a dunk by Royster left BCC down 62-60.
But Aiken scored on a layup after making a full-court pass on an inbounds pass, and that put it ahead 64-60 with 29.3 seconds left. BCC was called for a charge on its ensuing possession, and Aiken scored again on a full-court pass. A foul on the play and the free throw gave Aiken a 67-60 lead with 23 seconds left.
Thompson hit a 3-pointer at the top of the arc with 18.2 seconds left. BCC then made a steal but missed a 3-pointer that would have cut the lead to 1 point.
Aiken hit a 3-pointer in taking a 12-11 lead with 11:46 left in the first half, but Royster hit a 3-pointer to put BCC ahead 14-12.
Aiken led 19-18 with 6:27 left, but a 3-pointer by Rhodes tied the score 23-23 with 4:05 left. Aiken outscored BCC 6-2 the rest of the quarter for a 29-25 lead at halftime.
