The West Brunswick girls’ basketball team lost 69-48 Feb. 25 at Currituck High School in a first-round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.
West (3-20) trailed 26-5 after the first quarter but cut the lead to 33-24 by halftime.
“We got to within 43-37 in the third quarter,” West coach Mark Jones said, “but they got into a double-digit lead and we had some girls in foul trouble. We couldn’t recover.
“I’m very proud of these young ladies. They gave a great effort after being on a bus for seven hours. They didn’t give up and it was a good experience for our younger players to jump-start us into next season.”
Bre Small scored 11 points. Yana Bland scored nine points, made seven steals and had eight rebounds. She also had three assists. Leilani Emile scored five points and made three steals. Deja Jones scored two points and had five rebounds.
Four players from the junior varsity also played. Yasmine Daniels scored six points, Morgann Tew scored four points, Shirelle Grissett scored three points, and Aleigh Rhyne scored two points.
Senior Brie Hill hit two 3-pointers and senior Allison Brown had 11 rebounds and made three steals.
“It was Brie Hill’s and Allison Brown’s last game for us, and they did a great job with senior leadership this year,” Jones said.
