Whiteville beat West Brunswick 3-2 in a conference softball game April 11 in Shallotte.
The loss dropped West to 4-3 in the conference. Entering this week, five conference games are left.
For West, Caroline Gore started and gave up two hits and two earned runs in four innings. She walked two and struck out five.
Kim Cook finished, giving up three hits and walking none. She struck out one.
Whiteville scored its runs in the third inning, the eventual winning scoring on an errant throw during a rundown with two outs. A runner from third scored on the throw.
In the second, Leilani Emile and Ashley Smith walked. Sam Smith sacrificed Emile to third and Emile scored on a passed ball.
West was held to three hits. Bethany Morrison had the other hit.
In the sixth, Emile was hit by a pitch and Ashley Smith hit a run-scoring double.
West beat Hoggard 6-1 in a non-conference game April 10 in Wilmington.
Cook was the winning pitcher giving up one unearned run and one hit in three innings. Hoggard’s leadoff batter reached on a bunt but two errors on the play allowed her to score.
Cook walked none and struck out six.
Gore finished, throwing four hitless innings. She walked none and struck out seven.
For West (11-4), Emile had three RBIs. Ariana Thomas was 3-for-4. Gore was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The West junior varsity beat Whiteville 5-3. Randaisa Daniels and Jordan Clemmons each had two hits. Alysha Cortes, Brianna Molina, Dalys Rhyne, Sumner Russ and Ti’Erra Davis each had a hit.
Rhyne was the winning pitcher giving up two runs and two hits in five innings. She struck out five and walked none. Sam Frink pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits and one run. She struck out one and walked none.
West is unbeaten in the conference.
