The West Brunswick girls basketball team finished second in the two-day Tri-County Holiday Tournament, played Dec. 29-30 at East Duplin High School.

The Lady Trojans opened the tourney by routing South Lenoir 63-45. West led 15-11 after the first quarter and 28-24 at halftime. West then held South Lenoir to three points in taking a 41-27 through three quarters.

Breana Gause scored 15 points, hitting nine of 10 free throws, and Sheena Suttlemyre scored 14. Suttlemyre also had eight steals and five assists.

Kayla Padgett scored nine points and had 10 rebounds. Rebecca Sidelinger scored eight points and had seven rebounds. Jasmine Daniels scored eight points and had five assists and four rebounds. Jordan Shaw scored five points and Kristen White four.

In the title game, West was outscored 18-2 in the second quarter and lost 56-45 to North Lenoir.

Gause led West in scoring (14 points), steals (seven) and rebounds (six). Suttlemyre scored eight points. Mariah Evans had five rebounds, four steals and two points. Sidelinger scored five points, Padgett four and White two.

“The difference in the championship game,” West coach James Walker said, “was our inability to score in the second quarter. We had only one basket.

“The officials called very few fouls, and the other team was more aggressive. I think the lack of fouls called hurt our team.

“There was a total of four fouls called against both teams in the first half. That was unbelievable, since both teams were playing full-court pressure.”

West (7-5) does not have a home game until Jan. 13, when it plays Jacksonville.
