Lady Trojans sweep North

 LELAND—The West Brunswick High School volleyball beat North Brunswick 25-9, 25-15, 25-11 in a conference match Sept. 27 at North.

In the first set, senior Alex Wickel hit several aces as the Lady Trojans took a 14-0 lead en route to the victory. Wickel finished the match with 11 aces and 21 points.

North had a better start in the second set and trailed 10-8 before West began to build a lead. This time Hannah Stocks’ serves helped West take an 18-8 lead. Stocks had three aces in the run. Junior Meeka Hewett had two kills. A kill by Hewett got set point.

The third set was similar to the second, as West had a 9-7 lead before it began to pull ahead. Junior Olivia Babson held serve in a run as the Trojans took a 14-7 lead, the 14th point an ace by Babson.

After a change of possession, Wickel returned to the service line and she hit back-to-back winners in a 6-0 run that put West ahead 21-8. A kill by junior Nicole Phillips gave West a 22-10 lead, and a kill by Hewett gave West its 23rd point.

After an errant serve by North gave a sideout to West, Holly Fulford entered the game and she got match point on a service winner.

For the match, Phillips had 13 kills. Hewett had nine kills. Babson had seven kills.

Wickel had 26 assists. Stocks had seven digs.

The victory came two days after West had beaten Whiteville 25-17, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 at West.

Phillips had 23 kills, Hewett 21 kills and Babson 12 kills. Hewett also had nine digs.

 Wickel had seven aces and scored 16 points serving. She finished with 54 assists and handled the ball 128 times in the four-set match. She also had six digs.

Phillips scored 10 points serving and Babson eight points. Stocks had eight digs.

 

West JV

The West junior varsity beat Whiteville 25-9, 24-26, 25-21 in avenging an earlier loss. Leilani Emile had 10 kills. Sumner Russ had seven aces and scored 18 points serving. She also had 17 assists. Christian Strickland had 13 points serving.

Russ, Hayden Huffman and Jordan Clemmons each had four digs.
