Lady Trojans unable to rally

The West Brunswick High School girls basketball team lost it next-last conference game 44-28 Friday to Jacksonville.

The Lady Trojans and Jacksonville were tied 5-5 after the first quarter. A basket by the Trojans’ Jasmine Jackson just before the halftime buzzer left them down 14-10. Jacksonville then outscored West 14-11 in the third quarter for a 28-21 lead.

A 3-pointer by West’s Sheena Suttlemyre cut the Cardinal lead to 30-24 with 5 minutes, 54 seconds left. A basket and a free throw gave Jacksonville a 33-24 lead with 4:59 left.

A steal by Kayla Padgett led to a foul on Rebecca Sidelinger. She made 1-of-2 free throws with 2:24 left, cutting the lead to 35-28. But West scored no more points. Jacksonville scored nine straight points en route to the victory.

West’s top scorers were Suttlemyre and Sidelinger, who had seven points. Padgett scored five points and had nine rebounds. Breana Gause scored four points, Jasmine Daniels three and Jasmine Jackson two.

On Senior Night, West’s four seniors were honored: Jordan Shaw, Kristen White, Stacy Jackson and Mariah Evans.

West enters the final week of the regular season 2-9 in the Mideastern Conference, 9-12 overall.



Laney outscored West 8-0 early in the fourth quarter en route to a 35-30 victory in the conference game Feb. 3.

Kayla Padgett scored 11 points and had 13 rebounds in the loss. Breana Gause scored nine points and Sheena Suttlemyre seven. Suttlemyre had five assists and three steals. Jasmine Daniels scored two points and Rebecca Sidelinger one.

A free throw by Gause with 6:54 left tied the score 20-20, but the Bucs held West scoreless for nearly four minutes in taking a 28-20 lead with 3:04 left.

A 3-pointer by Daniels and her free throw with 2:33 left cut the lead to 28-24. But Laney made a layup from an inbounds play. A steal and a free throw with 1:13 left put Laney ahead 31-24. The Bucs then hit 4-of-8 free throws to clinch the victory.

For the game, West made 7-of-15 free throws.
