Dominique Graham made a steal and a layup in the final seconds to give Lenoir Community College a stunning 63-62 victory over Brunswick Community College in an NJCAA Division II Region 10 basketball opener Dec. 3.
BCC had taken a 62-61 lead on a running jump shot by Tyesha McLean with about 18 seconds left in the game at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym. BCC was inbounding the ball in the final seconds of an apparent victory when Graham made the steal and scored.
Graham’s basket completed a Lancer rally from a 53-40 deficit with about 7:49 left.
For BCC (2-2 overall), Shanita Hampton scored 19 points and Syerra Troutman 13.
Neither team shot well in the first half. The Lancers led 19-14 with 10 minutes left in the half. A 3-pointer by Hampton cut the lead to 25-25 with 3:27 left, and the half ended with Lenoir ahead 30-27. Hampton scored 12 of the Dolphins’ 27 points.
BCC trailed 40-39 early in the second half but then outscored the Lancers 14-0 in taking a 53-40 lead with 7:49 left. The Dolphins made 8-of-9 free throws in the run.
Lenoir rallied and Graham made a layup with 1:15 left to give the Lancers a 61-59 lead. Hampton hit a free throw with 39.8 seconds left and McLean scored to give BCC the 62-61 lead.
