Local African-American activists rejoice about historic presidential election

Growing up in Brunswick County in the 1950s, the idea of an African-American presidential candidate seemed like a far-off dream for young black men like Joe Butler and Bernest Hewett.

Educated in segregated schools, they sat in secondhand desks passed on from the white schools. There was no high school in the southwestern end of the county so going to high school meant temporarily boarding in Southport or Whiteville.
