The Ocean Ridge Sunday Couples League played its annual club championship tournament July 19 and July 26. A third day was scheduled for Aug. 2, but stormy weather shortened the day to a nine-hole regular competition at Lion’s Paw.

The July 19 couples event on Panther’s Run consisted of nine holes of alternate shot on the front nine, where both teed off, then selected the best drive and proceeded to alternate shots through the last putt on hole 9. On the back nine, the format was a two-person scramble, with two required drives from each player.

On July 26 at Tiger’s Eye, the format was scoring the best net ball of the two-person team, with six net scores required from each player over the 18 holes.

The third scheduled event on Lion’s Paw was to have been a repeat of the nine-hole alternate shot and nine-hole scramble format, but weather limited play to only nine holes. A separate nine-hole daily competition was conducted instead.

In addition to the net score championship competition, the couples also competed for the gross score championship, which was won decisively by Doug and Nancy MacDonald, with a gross score of 146, just 2-over par. The runners-up to the MacDonalds were Wally and Carole Milnichuk at 157. The winners of the overall two day, par 144 net club championship tournament were as follows. 1. Tom and Marie Best (116); 2. Don and Peggy Rowland (119); 3. Chappy and Peggy Jones (121, match of cards); 4. Eric and Carol Dunham (121, mc); 5. Rick and Pam McCafferty (123); 6. George James and Ann Turner (124): 7. Jerry and Margaret Dinda (125); 8. Carl and Carole Schuster (127); 9. Larry and Diane Wright (128,mc).

On Aug. 2 at Lion’s Paw, the couples’ league competed in two separate nine-hole events. On the front nine, the format was a scramble, requiring two drives from each player. On the back nine, the format was alternate shot, where both players teed off, selected the best drive and then alternated shots through the last putt on hole 18. Front-nine scramble: Karen and Wilbur Browning (24); Debbie MacFarlane and Greg Lipscomb (25); Peggy and Don Rowland (28); Carole and Carl Schuster (28); Pam and Rick McCafferty (29); Mary and Lew Hankes (30). Back-nine alternate shot: Sue and Rich Kane (34, match of cards); Peggy and Chappy Jones (34); Toni and Brian Roe (35); Pat and George Brooks (36); Marie and Tom Best (36); Grace and Bob Bradicich (36).
