Mann pitches West Black to victory against South Columbus

 The West Black beat South Columbus 7-3 in a non-conference baseball game June 18 in Shallotte.


West scored five runs in the bottom of the third. With one out, Dalton Mann reached on an error. Erick Hill singled. They advanced on a double steal. Tyler Stanley singled home a run. Zack Johnson singled to right field, scoring a run. Brett Babson walked, loading the bases. Connor Durham grounded out, but a run scored, giving West a 3-0 lead.  Tristan Lewis then reached on an overthrow of first base and two runs scored on the error.

West scored twice in the fifth. Johnson led off with a single to left field. Babson reached on a bunt. Durham was safe on a bunt, loading the bases. Lewis reached on a fielder’s choice, leaving the bases loaded. With two outs, Greg Noll’s infield pop-up was dropped and two runs scored.

South Columbus scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth off an infield error.

Dalton Mann started and gave up one hit and no runs in four innings. He walked there and struck out eight.

Cameron Lewis pitched two innings, giving up two hits and one unearned run. He walked two and struck out one. Catcher Garrison Gause threw out a runner in the sixth.

South Columbus scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh against Zach Fish. Josh Cribb entered the game with the bases loaded and got the game-ending out when left fielder Brett Babson caught a sinking liner.

West is 4-1. It split two games against Ashley, losing 4-2 and winning 11-0, coach Brian Alderson said. Zack Johnson hit a three-run home run in the victory and Carson Tew struck out 10 batters in six innings, he said.
