Master Gardeners to offer horticulture classes

-A A +A

The Master Gardeners of Brunswick County will offer a unique horticulture class for Brunswick County residents beginning Sept. 10 for six consecutive Mondays at the Bolivia Government Center Extension Services Training Center in Bolivia.
The class, which runs from 9-11:30 a.m., will provide the basic knowledge needed to maintain a yard/garden in the coastal plain of the Carolinas. Shorter and less expensive than the Master Gardener class, it contains less science and more “how to” content.
A Day in the Yard is offered for people wanting to increase their knowledge of yard/garden maintenance in this horticulture zone but not wanting to make the time commitment required of a Master Gardener.
The cost of the class is $75 and proceeds go to the Brunswick County Master Gardener Volunteer Association (BCMGVA). To enroll, contact Tom Woods at NCSU Extension Services at 253-2610.
The class includes six two-and-one-half-hour segments utilizing PowerPoint presentations and handouts. Each class will be taught by a Master Gardener. The course is offered multiple times in the spring and fall of each year at the Extension Services Training Center.
The topics for the six segments will be: soils and fertilization; lawns and irrigation; woody ornamentals and pruning; annuals, bulbs and perennials; insects and diseases; vegetables and fruits.
In addition, this class could be taken in your own community. If 15 or more people enroll and the community can provide a location, Master Gardeners will conduct the class at that location on the dates and times required.
