Chad McCumbee and Steve McAleer finished second Friday, March 14, in the inaugural Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway.
The finish was the best yet for McCumbee, a 29-year-old Supply native in his third year in the series.
McCumbee and McAleer drove a Mazda MX-5 for C.J. Wilson Racing in the Street Tuner class. Randy Pobst and Andrew Carbonell finished first, also in a Mazda MX-5.
C. J. Wilson Racing originally qualified first and third, but McAleer’s pole-winning No. 5 ModSpace Mazda and Tyler McQuarrie’s No. 3 Mazda’s were sent to the rear of the grid after failing post-qualifying inspection.
This was the second race in the Continental Tire Challenge season. McCumbee and McAleer drove to a 14th-place finish in the 2.5-hour season-opening race of the International Motor Sports Association Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge on Jan. 24, at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
The next race is the Continental Tire Festival of Speed powered by Mazda at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., on Saturday, May 3. Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge has 12 races this season.
