 Staff report

The public is invited to come and meet artist James Davis at an art reception 4-7 p.m. Friday, June 15, at Silver Coast Winery.

Davis, known as “The Myxolydian Artist,” has a career covering almost 40 dedicated, innovative years.

The Wilmington-based artist is founder of the Myxolydian School of Modern American Painting.

Working in his studio in downtown Wilmington, Davis creates art characterized by thousands of shades and the layering of colors. He is known for his mixed-media work that includes charcoals, oils and watercolors.

“Myxolydian” originated as a term for the primary jazz scale. Davis’ work is akin to jazz, as it can be interpreted in different ways depending on the time of day or night. His work typically is reflective with iridescent hues, most frequently in silvers, golds, reds and blues.

Davis’ work will be displayed at the winery throughout the summer, until Sept. 10.

Hours at the winery, at 6680 Barbeque Road, off N.C. 904, are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon-5 p.m. Sundays. Tours and tastings are available during those hours.
