Chandler joins Air Force

Tydaryll L. Chandler, son of Mark Chandler and Rebecca Castaneda of Shallotte, has joined the United States Air Force under the Delayed Entry Program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to enlist and delay going into basic military training for up to one year.

Qualified men and women are eligible to receive skill training, experience, and up to $20,000 in education benefits. After completing basic military training, airmen receive specialized technical training in one of more than 125 job career fields.

Chandler, a 2009 graduate of North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education in Raleigh, will report to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for basic training in April.

Sell returns from deployment

Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Paul A. Sell, brother of James P. Sell of Lemoyne, Pa., and Francis Burfield of Sunset Beach, is returning to the U.S. after a deployment to Iraq serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and the Southwest Asia Theater of Operations.

Sell’s will return to Joint Base Dix-McGuire-Lakehurst, N.J., for debriefing, evaluations and out-processing procedures before returning to his regularly assigned Army Reserve or National Guard unit.

Operation New Dawn transitions and signifies a formal end to U.S. military combat operations in Iraq. The transition shifts the U.S. emphasis from predominantly military to predominately civilian as the U.S. officials assist Iraqis in accordance with the Strategic Framework Agreement. The three primary missions of U.S. Forces include advising, assisting, and training the Iraqi Security Forces; conducting partnered counterterrorism operations; and providing support to provincial reconstruction teams and civilian partners as they help build Iraq’s civil capacity.

Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners. Active duty and reserve component members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been deployed to support the war against global terrorism outside the borders of the United States. U.S. troops serve in South, Southwest and Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, the Horn of Africa, islands in the Pacific, and Europe.

Sell, a construction engineering supervisor with 26 years of military service, is regularly assigned to the 228th Engineer Company based out of Spring City, Pa.

Simpson joins  Air Force

Kerem J. Simpson, son of Nermin Simpson of Fayetteville and Dewey Simpson of Supply, has joined the United States Air Force under the Delayed Entry Program. 

The program gives young men and women the opportunity to enlist and delay going into basic military training for up to one year.

Qualified men and women are eligible to receive skill training, experience, and up to $20,000 in education benefits. After completing basic military training, airmen receive specialized technical training in one of more than 125 job career fields.

Simpson, a 2010 graduate of the Performance Learning Center in Charlotte, will report to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for basic training in March 2011.

Travis enlists        in Navy

Trevor M. Travis, son of Sandra Travis of China Grove and Skip A. Travis of Southport, has enlisted in the United States Navy under the Delayed Entry Program at Navy Recruiting District in Raleigh.

The program allows recruits to enter the Navy and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as high school. Using recruiters as mentors, this program helps recruits ease into the transition from civilian to military life.

Travis, a 2010 graduate of South Brunswick High School in Southport, will report for active duty to undergo basic training at the Navy’s Recruit Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill.
