Museum of Coastal Carolina, planetarium set fall programs, hours

Museum of Coastal Carolina Family Programs Fall and Holiday 2010 Fall Schedule: Sept. 10-Dec. 18, Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Holiday Schedule open: Dec 21-23 and 28-30, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Dec. 24, 25, 31 and Jan. 1.

All day admission is $8 adults, $6 senior adults and students, $4 preschool, and age 2 and younger admitted free. Programs included with admission.

Family Programs 

Arrive and pay museum admission before the programs start. Late arrivals may not be admitted.

Second Friday Preschoolers Surprise: 11 a.m., theme changes monthly. Brunswick County parents get in free with your preschoolers. Independent make-and-take crafts. 

Salt Water Fishing: Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. Learn about bait, lures, rods and fishing for flounder and Spanish mackerel, surf fishing, crabbing, and clamming with Fred David, certified Coast Guard captain and former fishing charter owner. Demonstration and information only; no outdoor fishing.  

Ghost Lore and Legend Walk:  Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. Fun for all ages. Begin in Learning Center and walk to two haunted locations with local ghost story author, Will Smith. Outdoor walk, weather permitting or inside the Museum if inclement weather.

Snakes Alive! Saturday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. Presented by Matthew Bookout. Learn about venomous and non-venomous snakes that live in our coastal region. See live snakes and other live reptiles.

Holiday Crafts: Nov. 20-Dec. 31. Independent take-home crafts celebrating Kwanza, Hanukah, and Christmas for children of all ages. Write a letter to Santa and put it in our North Pole mailbox by Dec. 17. Include return address for Santa to reply.

Planetarium Fall and Holiday 2010 

New SciDome HD digital projection and 5.1 Surround Sound. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. Late arrivals are not admitted.

Admission per show: $8 adults, $6 senior adults and children (programs are subject to change without notice).

Build A Hubble Contest: Oct. 1-Nov. 1, $10 entry fee. Contest rules available online and at visitor services desk during business hours. Winner receives a new telescope on Nov. 13 during the Star Party.

Special Programs  

Saturday, Oct. 16, at 12:30 p.m. Celebrate the Space Shuttle. Learn about Discovery’s final space flight this fall and  enjoy a light snack of astronaut food. Program includes the 1 p.m. show, Astronaut.

Saturday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m. Star Party. Begin with a Sky Theater show, “Two Pieces of Glass” to discover the history of the telescope, how one works, where shooting stars come from, and participate with local astronomy clubs in an outdoor telescope viewing. Also learn about the Leonids meteor shower that peaks on Nov. 17-18. Telescope contest winner will be announced.

Saturday, Dec. 18, 21. Lunar eclipse information after each Sky Theater show. Learn about the lunar eclipse, how to observe it, and see one on the dome. 

Fall Sky Theater Shows  

Friday and Saturday from Sept. 10-Nov. 20. A live star show follows and complements each program.

1 p.m. Oasis in Space (all ages): Voyage through the solar system and deep into the universe in search of water, the key ingredient to life on earth. Learn about our solar system and the universe.  

2 p.m. Astronaut (all ages): What does it take to be an astronaut? Discover the training, dangers, and perils that face an astronaut.  

3 p.m. Seven Wonders (all ages): Turn back time and witness the seven ancient wonders of the world and journey through space to see seven cosmic wonders as never before seen.  

4 p.m. IBEX: Interstellar Boundary Explorer(ages 9 and up): Where does our Sun’s influence over the universe end? Learn about the solar heliosphere, a bubble caused by solar winds that protects Earth.

Nov. 26-27, Dec. 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, 21-23 and 28-30. Closed Dec. 24-25, 31 and Jan. 1.
