Those looking for extended holiday fun with family and friends this holiday season need look no further than the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.
Though closed for Christmas, the aquarium will reopen at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26.
For the first time, the aquarium will also be open New Year’s Day — on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014. The aquarium will operate during normal business hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Free daily programs offered with aquarium admission include two daily dive programs at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Times for additional feedings and live animal presentations can be found online at www.ncaquariums.com/fort-fisher.
In addition, during these last days of 2013, the aquarium will offer extended, behind-the-scenes tours to watch sharks and schooling fish take part in their own feasts on Friday, Dec. 27, and Monday, Dec. 30. Tickets for the 2 p.m. tour are $18 for ages 8 to 12, and $20 for ages 13 and older. Aquarium admission is included. Preregistration is required via the aquarium website or by calling (910) 458-7468.
Behind-the-scenes tours are also scheduled at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, and 11:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29.
The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located 15 miles south of Wilmington in Kure Beach on U.S. 421. The site is less than a mile from the Fort Fisher Ferry terminal.
Admission is $8 for ages 13-61; $7 for ages 62 and older; $6 for ages 3-12. Admission is free for children ages 2 and younger, registered groups of N.C. schoolchildren, and N.C. Aquarium Society members.
