North Brunswick's girls bedeviled by Red Springs

The North Brunswick High School girls basketball won one playoff game by 15 points but lost another by two points in finishing the season 18-8.

Below are summaries of the games.



RED SPRINGS—Red Springs made just two of nine free throws in the final 1 minute, 44 seconds, but those were enough to give the Red Devils a 54-52 victory over North in the second round of the Class AA state playoffs Feb. 26.

North trailed 53-52 and had the ball with 25.2 seconds left but was unable to score before fouling with 2.4 seconds left.

For North, sophomore guard Tyera Fisher scored 16 points, junior guard Asheley Robbins 14 and freshman guard LaDonna Sloan 10.

The Red Devils hit three straight 3-pointers in taking a 16-11 lead and led 20-14 with 5:42 left in the second quarter. But the Scorpions outscored Red Springs 18-2 over the next five minutes in taking a 32-22 lead at halftime.

In the run, a free throw by LaTesha Harrison tied the score 20-20, then Fisher scored on a layup, Sloan hit a short jumper and Fisher scored after making a steal. Now ahead 26-20, North got back-to-back 3-pointers by Sloan and Robbins, giving the Scorpions a 32-22 lead at halftime.

A 3-pointer by Sloan gave North a 38-27 lead with 4:10 left in the third quarter, but the Red Devils dominated the rest of the quarter. They hit four 3-pointers in a 17-5 run that cut North’s lead to 43-42. A steal of a ball being inbounded led to a foul and a free throw for a 44-43 lead entering the fourth quarter, a lead Red Springs never lost.

The Red Devils stole another ball being inbounded in taking a 46-43 lead early in the fourth quarter, and they took a 48-43 lead after making a layup with 4:55 left.

A rebound by Fisher cut the lead to 52-50 with 1:44 left. After the Red Devils hit one of three throws, Sloan rebounded a shot for a basket that cut the lead to 53-52 with 52 seconds left.

Red Springs missed two free throws with 44.2 seconds left, but North passed the ball out of bounds with 36.9 seconds left.

Red Springs again missed two free throws, with 34.4 seconds left, and North called time to set up a play with 25.2 seconds left. North got the ball inside but missed a shot. In the scramble for the rebound, North fouled with 2.4 seconds left, ending its chance for victory.

North opened the Class AA playoffs by beating First Flight 67-52 Feb. 24 at North. Sophomore guard Tyera Fisher scored 26 points and junior guard Asheley Robbins 18.

The margin of victory would have been larger but the Scorpions missed 17 free throws, and that allowed First Flight to stay close for most of the game.

Scoring by senior forward LaTesha Harrison and Fisher helped give North a 10-4 lead. Harrison scored six of her seven points during that span in the first quarter. A basket by sophomore center Alexis Mills, her only score, kept North ahead, 15-12, at the end of the quarter.

A basket by Robbins gave the Scorpions a 20-15 lead, but First Flight went on a 6-0 run for a 21-20 lead with 3:06 left in the half.

North matched that spree in the opening minutes of the second half. Ahead 26-25, North got a basket by Fisher off a pass from Harrison, an inside score by Fisher and another basket by Fisher, this one off a pass from Robbins.

Now ahead 32-25 with 6:43 left in the quarter, the Scorpions maintained that margin for most of the quarter. The lead went to 39-31 on Fisher’s best basket of the game: She dribbled along the left sideline and then cut to the basket and made a reverse layup.

A basket by Robbins just before the quarter ended gave the Scorpions a 46-40 lead.

North took control for good early in the fourth quarter. Sophomore forward Barbara Graham made two free throws, Fisher hit a 3-pointer while sliding backward to the floor and Robbins made a full-court layup. With 5:55 left, North led 53-42.

A 6-0 run then clinched the victory. Jolanda White put back a rebound, Robbins scored and Fisher made a layup after a steal. That put North ahead 59-44 with 4:12 left, and First Flight was unable to rally.
