SOUTHPORT—An Oak Island man accused of breaking into several Southport-area businesses has been arrested.
Shawn Duane Brennan, 26, of 219 NE 48th St., has been arrested and charged with three counts of property damage, two counts of common-law robbery, three counts of breaking and entering, illegal burning of a building and possession stolen goods.
Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove said in addition to breaking into several Southport-area businesses, Brennan also allegedly set fire to Prevatte and Prevatte Law Firm on Howe Street.
Dove said Brennan was charged with two counts of common-law robbery for allegedly robbing the Southport Walmart and Kangaroo on Howe Street. Dove said Brennan was armed with a knife and stole $142 from Kangaroo.
A Southport Police officer identified Brennan, and Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office K-9 tracked him back to his apartment in Southport Greens. There, officers recovered stolen property and evidence from the previous break-ins, Dove said.
“I’d just like to thank the sheriff’s department,” Dove said. “We formed a coalition there, and they sent down extra troops, officers on bikes and K-9s. With the saturation, we finally got the subject.”
At press time Tuesday, Brennan remained in custody at the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $110,000 secured bond.
