Oak Island man charged with coin machine break-in, theft; more warrants coming

Police charged Daniel Chris Gibides, 39, of 3 St. Andrew’s Drive, Oak Island, with felony breaking and entering and misdemeanor damaging a coin-operated machine at Hill’s Grocery Store on Main Street.

The reporting officer caught Gibides breaking into a Pepsi machine. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center and placed on a $12,000 secured bond.

Police also investigated similar coin-operated machine break-ins at GoGas, Black’s Tire Service, Kimball’s Furniture, Lowes Foods and Shallotte Electric Stores.

More warrants against Gibides are pending, a police department spokesperson said.

Shallotte police also charged the following people and investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from police reports.

•Police charged Daniel Ray Bennett, 45, of 370 Gray Bridge Road, Shallotte, with driving while impaired, driving left of center and having an open container. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center and placed on a $1,000 secured bond.

•Police charged William David Salmon, 18, of 143 Wall St., Shallotte, with larceny for taking $411.96 worth of merchandise out of Walmart without paying for it. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center and placed on a $2,000 secured bond.

•Breaking and entering and larceny on Al Street; suspect went into victim’s residence without permission and took a $600 Playstation 3, a $300 GPS system, $360 worth of computer games 20 DVDs valued at $200 and $50 worth of cables. Witnesses saw the suspect near the residence and exiting the residence.

•Larceny at Calvary Baptist Church in Shallotte; victim left purse in the bathroom and someone took the purse’s contents including a $200 cell phone a $320 mp3 player and a $20 make-up bag.

•Larceny at Office Depot; suspect took a $49.99 DVD drive and a $92.99 black leather carry-on bag without paying for them.

•Larceny of a motor vehicle, burglary and larceny of a purse on Paisley Drive; suspect took victim’s truck, valued at $12,000, along with $4,000 worth of hand tools, two pool sticks valued at $1,100, $400 in cash, a $300 Blackberry and a $50 purse.

•Breaking and entering and larceny of property on Paisley Drive; suspect entered apartment and took a $3,000 Hewlett-Packard laptop computer and $780 in cash.

•Larceny of purse on Paisley Drive; suspect took victim’s purse containing a $400 iPhone from her car.

•Harassment/knocking on doors; suspect knocked on the victim’s windows and doors and ran away. The victim told the responding officer that the suspect does this all night and it has happened between 10 and 15 times. The officer stated he would advise patrol officers to check on the house at night.

•Strong-arm robbery at Thomas Drugs; suspect grabbed victim’s prescription, a $3 pain patch, as she exited the store.

•Breaking and entering and larceny of medication at Walmart; suspect took $60 worth of medication, a $320 iPod and charger, a $500 camera, a GPS system cord and a cell phone charger from the victim’s car.

•Credit card fraud at Burger King and McDonald’s; suspect used the victim’s debit card for purchases.

•Forgery and uttering at Hill’s Grocery; suspect issued a $68.68 forged check on the victim’s account.

•Vandalism on Fairway Drive; suspect threw a flowerpot at victim’s mailbox, causing $60 in damage.
