OIB runner among winners in Oyster Festival races

OCEAN ISLE BEACH— In the rain Saturday morning, Ocean Isle Beach resident Margaret Coleman won the women’s 5-kilometer run in the Oyster Festival Road Race.

Coleman, 19, finished in 22 minutes, 52 seconds and was 17th overall. Brooke Penegar, 12, of Lancaster, S.C., was the second-fastest woman (18th in 22:59) and Randi Sheppard, 19, of Wilmington, was the third fastest (22nd in 24:10).

Dwight Jacobs won the 10-kilometer Oyster Festival Road Race. Jacobs, a 47-year-old Greensboro resident, finished the 6.2-mile race in 36 minutes, 7 seconds.

Wylie Penegar, 15, of Lancaster, was second in 36:49. Vincent Avitabile, 50, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was third in 38:27.

The top local finisher was Dale Waters, 43, of Ocean Isle Beach. He was 13th in 42:12.

Among the women, the top finisher was Emma Batchelor, 28, of Charleston, S.C. She finished 26th overall in 46:54. Sara Livingston, 31, of Wilmington, was second in 50:07 (36th overall). She finished 11 seconds ahead of Robyn Tumbarello, 36, of Mount Airy.

The top local female runner was Jennifer Parker, 34, of Ocean Isle Beach. She was the 10th-fastest woman (51st overall) and finished in 54:43.

The 10-kilometer race attracted 92 runners.

In the men’s 5-kilometer race, Aaron Coe, 25, of Portland, Ore., finished first in 18:24, one second ahead of Johnny Reinhold, 18, of Edenton. Steven Hemric, 16, of Jonesville, was third in 18:58.

The top local runner was Thomas Perry, 19, of Calabash. He ran the course in 21:07 and finished eighth. He was 17 seconds ahead of Brandon McGirt, 16, a cross-country runner at South Brunswick High School.

The 5-kilometer race had 158 entries.

In the 1-mile fun run, Austin Tumbarello, 7, of Mount Airy, was first in 8:15. He beat Grayson Spell by four seconds. Nicole Michelle Heape, 14, of Ash, finished 11th in 13:08 and was the third-fastest female runner. Megan McGirt, 15, of Southport, was 13th in 13:08. The race had 33 entries.

Despite the rain, the races attracted 283 runners. Complete results are at wilmingtonroadrunners.org.
