Brunswick County’s newest neighborhood foundation, the Ocean Ridge Charities Association (ORCA), has donated $10,000 to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter’s Closer to Home capital campaign. The gift was originally planned as a five-year pledge, but ORCA raised the funds from within the Ocean Ridge community in less than 90 days. A family alcove at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick will be named in honor of ORCA’s gift.
“It was a labor of love,” said Maggi Edwards, chairwoman of the campaign. “So many of our residents have been touched by the work of hospice either here in Brunswick County or elsewhere. Hospice fundraising easily resonated among our residents.”
Mike Gildea, president and founding member of ORCA, noted, “This community continues to amaze me with their generosity and commitment to giving back to Brunswick County.”
ORCA had launched a multi-level fundraising campaign last September that included a direct mail appeal, the creation of a community cookbook and a related Bistro Nite event. By early December, these funding sources, plus memorial contributions in memory of Mary Gildea, had raised the $10,000 pledge.
“We’re exceedingly grateful not only to the more than 350 Ocean Ridge donors, but to the more than 100 fundraising volunteers that helped make this gift a reality,” Edwards said.
