Breast cancer runs in Kimmie Durham’s family. Her mother was diagnosed at 52 and her grandmother at 67.
Durham, of Ocean Isle Beach, found a lump in her breast during a self-examination, and after her surgery she was officially diagnosed with breast cancer. Benign cells were surrounding the cancerous tumor the doctors didn’t originally find.
“The only way you’re going to save your own life is to advocate,” Durham said. “And we’re all living much longer because of early detection.”
