JACKSONVILLE—The Brunswick County Post 68 American Legion baseball team opened its season by beating Jacksonville 8-7 in 10 innings on Friday.
Post 68 led 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning but Jacksonville scored four runs to take a 7-5 lead. Post 68 tied the score by scoring twice in the top of the ninth.
“The kids showed up to play baseball,” Post 68 manager Randy Fennell said. “We got down in the bottom of the eighth but scored twice in the ninth to tie the game. They didn’t give up.”
Jacob Morehouse was the winning pitcher. He pitched the final two innings. He faced six batters. He gave up no hits and no walks. He struck out three.
Ryan Waldrep started and pitched six innings. He faced 24 batters and gave up three runs, two of them earned. He gave up four hits and two walks. He struck out eight.
Josh Hamilton pitched one inning. He faced seven batters. He gave up three runs, two hits, one home run and one walk.
Aaron Evans pitched one inning. He faced four batters. He gave up one run and one hit.
Josh Powell was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Ryan Morgan was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. Chad Malpass was 2-for-5. Elliott Swain was 1-for-3 with a home run.
Post 28 was scheduled to play Ashley on Memorial Day but the game was canceled. Ashley will not have a team this season, Fennell said.
Post 68 was scheduled to play Duplin in a home game on Wednesday (after press time). Post 68 has a 7 p.m. home game on Friday against Wallace and a 3 p.m. home doubleheader on Saturday against Whiteville.
