Proudly serving Brunswick County for 50 years

-A A +A

The dateline for the first edition of The Brunswick Beacon, which was then called the Shallotte Press, was Nov. 1, 1962.
A few issues later, after a reader won a naming competition, the newspaper changed its name to The Brunswick Beacon.
In the 50 years since this newspaper was founded by Robert Stanley, men and women of all ages and all walks of life have come to work here, trying the best we can to continue to provide this community with accurate, high-quality journalism, photography and advertisements, while entertaining a broad spectrum of readers.
The Beacon and its journalism standards flourished under owners Eddie and Carolyn Sweatt, and today that tradition continues under the guiding hand of parent company Landmark Community Newspapers.
It’s been no easy task, but it’s one most people who have worked here will tell you has been well worth the effort.
This month, we celebrate 50 years of serving Brunswick County. We’re close to wrapping up our “Looking Back” series, several stories that have taken readers on a walk down memory lane from our first issue in 1962 to present-day.
Our next celebration honoring our 50 years is next week, when we will open our doors to the public from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15. We hope you will join us that afternoon. We will have entertainment, refreshments and more.
If you’re here at 4:15 p.m., you can hear a few guest speakers and take part in a brief ceremony we’re planning.
The day is a way for us to say thank you for supporting us for the past 50 years. It is also a chance for us to get to know one another a little better. If you stop by, you can meet the staff that works here today, and maybe some of those who worked here during the many years of our history. We’re looking forward to seeing your faces and hearing from you.
While we’re spending a lot of time looking back, we’re also working toward continuing to prosper and grow as Brunswick County’s most comprehensive news source. Whether you’re reading the newspaper in print, checking it out online, following us on social media or tuning into our television news show on ATMC-TV, know that we’re committed to being your No. 1 source for Brunswick County news.
We’re also committed to making a difference in the community we serve. Throughout the year, we help a number of charitable organizations that impact Brunswick County. Our staff members help a number of community and nonprofit groups. We donate scholarship funds to local high school students. We also help many nonprofits with promoting and putting on a variety of fundraisers each year.
We do it because we love Brunswick County, and we want you to know we care about the place we live.
We hope you’ll join us in our celebration and help us look forward to our future. Please join us at our open house. If you can’t make it, send us a note to P.O. Box 2558, Shallotte, NC 28459 or email us at editor@brunswickbeacon.com.
It’s been a great 50 years, and we’re looking forward to many, many more to come.
