To the editor: It’s hard to imagine a world without heroes.

At the American Red Cross, we work with heroes every day. They’re the backbone of every hometown and represent the essence of our organization. Heroes touch our lives each day—making us feel safe, making us feel proud.

March is Red Cross Month, and the Cape Fear Chapter is excited to take this opportunity to thank our Red Cross family of heroes—volunteers, donors, partners and employees.

We honor our “extended family,” too, of police, firefighters, businesses and nonprofit organizations whose caring acts help the people relying on us in difficult times, and fuel our national and global humanitarian mission.

For the next few weeks, dozens of heroes in the Cape Fear area will be embarking on what seems like a monumental task, raising $1,000 each to benefit the life-saving work of the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Their hard work and humanitarian spirit will enable our chapter to continue to provide warmth and comfort to disaster victims, transmit important messages to our military members serving overseas, and help us train our community to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

They will truly be heroes for the American Red Cross.

Our heroes are incredibly inventive in the ways they choose to raise money. You will see them organizing bowl-a-thons, having penny drives, selling Red Cross squares and bracelets, donating proceeds from theater performances or events at area restaurants and coordinating a variety of other activities to support our humanitarian mission.

If you come into contact with a hero in the coming weeks, please thank that person for his/her commitment to our community and be as generous as you can in support of the work of the Red Cross.

We couldn’t keep our promise to help our neighbors without your precious gifts of time, money and blood.

Whether you’re a blood donor, a financial donor, volunteer or community partner— you make it possible for us to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and emergencies.

Please support our heroes for the American Red Cross this month.
