SHALLOTTE—Shopping in Shallotte can help others.
Communities in Schools recently began operating The Red House Specialty Shops on Main Street.
There are 40-plus vendors and a portion of every purchase is donated to CIS.
The store rents booth/shelf space to vendors. A portion of the rent and fees from items sold are set aside for CIS.
Volunteers work in the store and are available to help shoppers find the perfect item.
“If the vendors do well, we do well,” said Terry Little, shop administrator. “We have gifts for any season: Christmas holiday items, artwork, pottery and more. There is a variation from handmade to retail gifts.”
The store features local artisans as well as retailers. There is jewelry, purses, scarves and other accessories, original artwork, shabby chic furniture, soaps, lotions, specialty foods, signs and more.
CIS already operates three thrift stores, which help fund the organization’s programs.
“We wanted to do something different. We researched the area and found a new trend,” Little said. “CIS is being proactive in creating ways to create funding for the drop-out prevention program.”
The mission of CIS is “to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS believes every child deserves a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a marketable skill to use upon graduation, a chance to give back to the community, and a healthy start.”
The goal of The Red House Specialty Shops is to offer consumers a fun shopping experience while enabling CIS to continue its work with students in Brunswick County.
“We need shoppers,” Little said. “It is the place to shop for Christmas.”
The Red House Specialty Shops is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon-4 p.m. Sundays.
The store is at 4606 Main St. in Shallotte and may be reached at 754-4442. Visit the store on Facebook for specials and featured items.
