Church to host soup cook-off
The north area Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center’s second annual soup cook-off will be from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, in the Life Center at Little River United Methodist Church, 1629 U.S. 17 N in Little River, S.C.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 4-12 years old and free for children younger than 3 years old.
Many local civic and church groups, local restaurants and individuals will offer their special soups for tasting. Diners may taste all soups and choose their favorite, cast their vote and the winner will have “braggin’ rights” for the best soup in the North Strand area for 2011. Desserts and beverages will also be provided.
There will also be free blood pressure screenings, a movie for the kids, entertaining clowns and face painting. Verne Critz will be the master of ceremonies and many door prizes will be given away.

Tickets will also be on sale at the door. Proceeds from this event will be used to help those who cannot pay for counseling at the two area counseling offices at Little River UMC and Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church.
Camp UMC to begin new series
Camp United Methodist Church of Shallotte will begin a three-week series on “The Beatitudes” with the Rev. Richard Vaughan on Sunday, Jan. 9.
“The Beatitudes: Part I” is based upon Matthew 5:1-3.
Services will be at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday school/Bible study for children and adults begins at 9:45 a.m. A nursery is available for all services.

Little River UMC to begin series
The Little River United Methodist Church, U.S. 17 and Mineola Avenue in Little River, S.C., is introducing a new sermon series: “Making Love Last A Lifetime: Biblical Perspectives on Love, Marriage & Sex” beginning Sunday, Jan. 9.
Traditional worship times are at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. with a contemporary service at 9:45 a.m.
Plan to be a part of the eight-week sermon series intended to help married persons grow in their relationship with their spouses so they may experience all that God intends for marriage to be, and to help single persons prepare for a successful marriage relationship.

Zion Hill plans deacon program
Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2001 Zion Hill Road in Bolivia, will present a deacons appreciation program at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9.
The Rev. Gregory Hewett of St. Louis Missionary Baptist Church in Chinquapin will be guest minister. Members of the St. Louis Missionary Baptist Church will render musical services. Refreshments will be served following the service.
New Bible study set at Camp UMC
Register now to participate in one of the new Bible studies at Camp United Methodist Church of Shallotte beginning in January.
“The Power of a Woman’s Words” will be offered from 10-11:30 a.m. every Wednesday morning from Jan. 12-Feb. 16. The class will be followed by an optional hour of making cards of encouragement.
A new parenting study, “Have a New Kid by Friday,” will be from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Sunday mornings from Jan. 9-Feb. 20. This class will teach you how to change your child’s attitude, behavior and character in just five days.
