To the editor:
I agree with Mr. Norman Horne’s views in the Aug. 2 issue of the Beacon. I, too, was raised with cap pistols and BB guns, and my father took my brother and me into the field at an early age to instruct us on proper hunting, with safety foremost.
I also take issue with Mr. John Heidtke’s guest column of July 26. Among other items, I was stunned that a former FBI agent would broadcast to the world that after obtaining a conceal-carry permit, he does not carry and his guns are unloaded and out of sight. Thieves have probably emblazoned his picture in their minds as one not to be concerned about.
Pardon me, Mr. Heidtke, I would rather be in a theater or store with Mr. Horne. You’ve evidently forgotten two truisms. When seconds count, police are only minutes away. Also, the police are not around to protect you. They exist to catch the guy who robbed or shot you.
