Rip currents on OIB, Sunset Beach cause three deaths in one day

A chief district court judge from Wilkesboro and a woman he tried to help escape a rip current on Sunset Beach died Wednesday.

Mitchell Lynn McLean, 54, received CPR at the scene and then was transported to Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, where he died Wednesday evening, according to Sunset Beach Chief of Police Lisa Massey.

Mary Anne Galway, 54, also received CPR at the beach. She was taken by ambulance to the Brunswick medical center, and then airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she died in the intensive care unit.
