After being closed for two days in a row, Brunswick County Schools will be on a two-hour delay Friday, Feb. 14, for students and staff because of the weather.
Friday, Feb. 14, and Thursday, Feb. 13, were to have been regular school days in lieu of teacher workdays because of the previous ice storm.
There has been no decision on how and when make-up days for this week's weather closings will occur. That information will be discussed and shared later, said Jessica Swencki, the school district’s executive director of quality assurance and community engagement.
Schools were closed Wednesday, Feb. 12. Classes were dismissed early Tuesday, Feb. 11, with high schools letting out at 11:45 a.m., middle schools at noon and elementary schools at 12:45 p.m. Staff dismissed at the direction of his or her immediate supervisor.
All evening activities were canceled, Thursday, Feb. 13, just as they were Tuesday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 12.
The decision to close was made after careful monitoring of conditions throughout the day and close consultation with Brunswick County Emergency Management and local law enforcement officials, Swencki said. Interior conditions within the county created treacherous road conditions coupled with widespread power outages.
In his monthly video message, Superintendent Edward Pruden addressed how decisions to close school are made during inclement weather and the instructional importance of making up the missed days.
Here are the other previously scheduled make-up days:
Friday, April 18 — Regular school day (extends scheduled early release day)
Wednesday, June 11 — Regular school day (extends scheduled early release day)
Thursday, June 12 — New last day of school, early release day (day added to calendar)
Because of this schedule, parent conferences will be held after school Thursday, March 6. Elementary conferences will be from 5 to 8 p.m. and middle/high school conferences will be from 4 to 7 p.m.
