The Beachcombers played the first of four rounds of their annual young guys against old guys tournament on Friday, March 21, at Crow Creek. The young guys took the early lead, 18-12. The format is a match play with one point for the front nine, one point for the back nine and one point overall. Match results were: Gary Gutheil beat B. McDavit 2-1, Sid Silvers beat Jim Beairsto 3- 0, Reggie Auten beat Hal Riebesehl 1, Sid Silvers beat Ed Redman 2.5-0.5, Bob Brownley beat Bob Cecil 3-0, Bob Smith beat Dan O’Connell 3-0, Jim Ritter beat Scott McBean 2-1, Ed Nocella beat R. Dunham 3-0, Paul Michal beat Tom Culverwell 3-0, Roy Laster and T. Quick tied 1.5-1.5. Low scores: Silvers, 82, and Gary Gutheil, 89. Net: Silvers and Brownley, 68. Bob Brownley is golfer of the week.

 

Brick Landing

In the Ace of the Month net tournament Thursday, March 20, Sharon Brown won Ace of the Month with a score of 67. First flight winner was Keith Webb with a score of 72. Second was Irene Dowdy with a score of 75 and third was Bonnie Giehl with a score of 83. Second flight winner was Sharon Brown with a score of 67. Second was Sharon Deutsch with a score of 68 and third was Mary Biesack with a score of 73. Third flight winner was Mary Dixon with a score of 70. Second was Peg Agrimonti with a score of 83 and third was Mary Tacea with a score of 98. Giehl birdied Nos. 4 and 12, Lisa Weller had a chip-in birdie on No. 2 and Ellen Rogoff had a chip-in on No. 16. Closest to pin: Deutsch at No. 2 and Brown at No. 9.

On Wednesday, March 19, at the Byrd Sea Trail Course, the team Sid Pennington, Greg Jensen, Steve Maiorca and Mike Orlo placed first at 180 in a game of one net and one gross on the par 4s and two nets and one gross on the par 5s and the par 3s. Second were Joe Gallo, John Ducey, Chuck Harris and a player by draw.

On Friday, March 21, at Heather Glen, the winning team of Orlo, Berry Vandermeer, Jody Serensits and John Tighe shot a 210 (14-over par). The format was two gross scores and one net score on the par 3s and the par 4s and one gross and one net on the par 5s. Second were Pete Scott, Dan Kutschman, Bob Levan and a player by draw.

Church tournament

The Shallotte Presbyterian Church will play its annual community charity golf tournament in memory of Jerry Oakley on May 24 at the Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort and Golf. The golf begins at 9 a.m. Breakfast, buffet lunch and free range balls are included in the price of $75 per golfer. There will be closest to the pin and long drive contests.
