Scorpions sweep Whiteville

North Brunswick’s girls and boys resumed Waccamaw 1A/2A Conference high school basketball action last Wednesday with victories against visiting Whiteville.

The Lady Scorpions won 44-41 behind 22 points from freshman Tyera Fisher, while junior Shawn Sanders racked up a career-high 39 points in an 83-70 win for the boys.

In the girls’ game, North Brunswick jumped out to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter. Whiteville outscored the Lady Scorpions 25-10 in the second and third periods to take a 31-30 lead.

North Brunswick regained the lead in the fourth quarter and improved to 2-0 in the conference and 9-2 overall. Fisher had nine rebounds and Lynse McNeil had eight points.

North Brunswick’s boys evened their conference record at 1-1 and improved to 4-7 overall with their victory. The Scorpions outscored Whiteville in every quarter.

In addition to his 39 points, Sanders pulled down 15 rebounds. Shawn Batts and Reggie Cobia chipped in 11 points apiece and Gerald Moore added nine points and six assists for the Scorpions.
