Seven county wrestlers qualify for state meet

North Brunswick’s Homero Segura and South Brunswick’s Trent Allen won regional wrestling championships Saturday.
West Brunswick High School advanced five wrestlers Saturday from the Class 3A Regional to the state meet this coming weekend.
At 113 pounds, West sophomore Jyquan Green finished second, losing 11-5 to Zovek Chapa of Fike.
At 126 pounds, West sophomore Campbell Alspaugh finished third, beating David Giordano of Washington by fall in 2:40. Campbell had lost 16-7 earlier in the tourney to eventual champion Tyler Ross of Jacksonville.
At 195 pounds, West junior Dakota Smith finished fourth, losing 3-2 in the consolation final to Keyaad Coley of Rocky Mount. Smith had lost 4-2 earlier in the tourney to eventual champion Travis Collins of Southern Nash.
At 220 pounds, West senior Bobby McRainey finished third, beating Jeffery Person of Rocky Mount 6-1 in the consolation final.
At 285 pounds, West junior Marquis Brown finished third, winning the consolation final by fall in 41 seconds against Trey Tyson of South Central. Brown had lost 6-3 earlier in the tourney to eventual champion Michael Doherty of Currituck County.
South had one finalist, unbeaten junior Allen, who won the 220-pound class by beating Sterling Mills of D.H. Conley 4-0. Allen also beat McRainey 4-1 en route to the final.
North Brunswick’s Segura, a senior, won the 182-pound title in the 2A Mideast Regional, beating senior Bailey Le of Wheatmore 7-5. Segura entered the tourney 29-8.
The state meet is Feb. 28-March 2 at Greensboro Coliseum. Wrestling will start at 5 p.m. Thursday with the 4A classification first round, followed later in the evening by first round matches in 2A and 3A. Those classes will begin wrestling again at 9 a.m.  Friday, with the 1A starting at 2 p.m. because the field in that classification has fewer wrestlers. The tournament will run through Saturday evening with the championship finals starting at 5 p.m.
