It’s a state law and one group wants to spread awareness and make it fun.
In 2001, the Bicycle Safety Act became a law in the state of North Carolina. The law requires every person younger than 16 years old to wear an approved bicycle helmet when operating a bicycle on any public road, public bicycle path or other public right-of-way.
From 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, Shallotte Elks Lodge No. 2854 will have a bicycle safety rodeo in the Shallotte Walmart parking lot on Main Street.
