Shallotte Middle School students earn awards, honors

 On Wednesday, June 8, students, faculty and families of the eighth-grade class at Shallotte Middle School celebrated the achievements of a successful year at its annual awards day.

Students receiving community-sponsored awards were: the Brunswick County Community Watch Citizenship Award to Heather Soucek; Gary Poulos Memorial Award to Mary Elise Harrell; the Shallotte Police Department Outstanding Citizen Award to Mary Boyd Barefoot; the DAR Citizenship awards to Hayley Grimes and Tyler Caron; the Woodmen of the World Outstanding History Student Award to Joseph Hurst; and the Peer Court Award to Breanna McDonald and Amber Fulford.

Principal’s awards went to Christopher Lawson, Brittney Miller, Zachary Burns, Kaitlin Shook, Ann Benton, Holly Anderson, Gabrielle Hall, Da’zia Gause, Evilyn Andres and Adrianne Tribble.

The Outstanding Athlete awards were given to Grace Young and Dylan Darguzas.

The first recipient of the Most Outstanding Writer Award, created to honor the retiring Janice Gore, was Joseph Hurst.

The Most Improved Communication Skills Student Award, created to honor Mrs. Hewett’s 50 years of service to Brunswick County, went to Ashien Graves.

Academically, the most outstanding students in communication skills were: Jordan Canady, Carson Hicks, Ashien Graves, lridian Valerio, Mary Boyd Barefoot, Keyanna Alexander, Heather Soucek, Ryan Walz, Lily Socentino and Karyssa Nixon. The most outstanding students in math were: Heather Soucek, Taylor Sealey, Evilyn Andres, Austin VanderMolen, Kaitlin Shook, Connor Johnston, Angie Melgar and Mary Elise Harrell. 

The most outstanding students in Algebra I were: Tyler Caron and Michael Dobbins.

The most outstanding students in science were: Rosario Dominguez, Nick Massey, Emily Tate, Tyler Caron, Dylan Darguzas, Josh Frias and Carson Hicks. 

The most outstanding students in social studies were: Dakota Smith, Tyler Caron, Lily Cosentino, Daniel Polizzotti and Hayley Grimes.

Most improved awards were given in communication skills to: Austin Philyaw, Tessa Taylor, Zachary Cox, Isiah McKnight, Mary Elise Harrell, Dylan Willoughby, Asia Johnson, Da’zia Gause and Angie Maigar Lazo; in math to: Christina Soto, Antwain Johnson, Noe’ Bautista-Gomez, Devante Marlowe, Adrianne Tribble, Anthony Thornton, Patrick Fulmer, Brian Erikson, and Alan Powell; in Algebra I to: Alexis Raynor and Aleisha Poerio; in science to: Gabrielle Hall, Evilyn Andres, Jorge Vilialva, Alice Davis, Mary Elise Harrell, Zach Cox, Brittney Miller, Patrick Fulmer and Angie Melgar-Lazo; and in social studies to: Katranda Reaves, Kevin Alarcon, Tyler Stanley, Gabrielle Hall and Nick Massey.

On the last day of school, the following students were awarded certificates for perfect attendance: Evilyn Adres, Justin Green, Antwain Johnson, Desmund Stanley, Adrianne Tribble and Kenneth Williams Jr.
