Shallotte wins opener in rout

The Shallotte Middle School football team opened its season Sept. 9 by routing Chadbourn 54-12 at West Columbus High School.

SMS scored three times in the first quarter.

Greg Bell scored Shallotte’s first points on a 10-yard run.

Jamar Bethea scored on a 15-yard punt return and Markel Jones scored on the two-point conversion.

Bell scored on 25-yard run and Scottie Melvin kicked the extra point, putting SMS ahead 21-0.

In the second quarter, Jones scored on a 55-yard run. Melvin’s extra point put SMS ahead 28-0 at halftime.

Shallotte scored four times in the third quarter.

Jones scored on a 20-yard run and Bethea scored on a 23-yard run. Phillip Gause scored on a 50-yard run, and when Chad Milligan scored on the two-point conversion pass from Dustin Darguzas, the lead went to 48-0.

Khalil Gause scored Shallotte’s final points on a 5-yard run.

Jones finished with eight carries for 140 yards. Bell had four carries for 75 yards. Bethea had two carries for 35 yards. He also had two quarterback sacks and 11 tackles.

Phillip Gause had two carries for 60 yards. Caleb Morrison had three carries for 25 yards. Kyle Powers had two carries for 15 yards.

John Shipman, Hunter Howard and Garrett Holden had a great game on both lines, coach Mark Jones said.

Shallotte’s next home game is 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against Burgaw.

The rest of the schedule: 4:30 p.m. Oct. 8 against Topsail, 4:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at South Middle School, 4:30 p.m. Oct. 21 at Cape Fear, 4:30 p.m. Oct. 29 against Leland, 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at Hallsboro.
