Many Brunswick County citizens have started their holiday shopping, which will last from now through Christmas Day. There are some things we recommend you do prior to leaving your home to go shopping.
•Let family members or friends know you will be gone and when you are planning to return.
•Leave a light on and a radio or television.
•Make sure all doors are locked and windows are closed and latched. Close the blinds or curtains.
•You should leave your porch lights on in the front and back of your home. Motion-sensor lights are ideal, however, all light helps in deterring crime.
•Always make sure your automobiles are locked and secure in the driveway and no valuables are left inside.
•Try not to put boxes or trash that identifies big-ticket items in plain view of everyone, especially items like electronics, TVs, jewelry boxes, etc. That is like an advertisement of what is in your home to would-be criminals. Break down the boxes and take them to the dump or try to get it all in the trashcan.
•Personalize all of your electronics with a special mark, and write down all serial numbers in a book. If anything gets stolen and recovered, it can be easily identified for law enforcement and/or insurance purposes.
Doing the things suggested here can help stop crime. It is also a good idea to have a community watch program in your neighborhood. Watching out for your neighbors is a benefit to your community and our county.
For more information about community watch programs, contact Sgt. Bert Reaves or Deputy T. K. Nowell at 253-2777.
