The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a 21-year-old Shallotte man.
At around 2 p.m. Tuesday, deputies attempted to serve felony warrants to Tyler Gray Hughes, 21, at 375 High Hills Drive in Shallotte.
When officers arrived at the residence, Hughes fled into a wooded area behind the residence. At that time, Hughes’ pit bull named “Beast” charged Deputy Andrew Lentz. When the dog was about five feet from him, Lentz fired two shots, killing the animal instantly.
Officers were unable to locate Hughes, who is currently wanted on multiple felony charges including two counts of breaking-and-entering, two counts of larceny after breaking-and-entering, larceny of a firearm and injury to real property.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Hughes is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 253-2777.
A follow-up investigation of the shooting is being conducted by the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards.
