Shock opens season with win

The Shallotte Shock U12 girls’ soccer team began its spring season with a target on its back. After an undefeated fall season, the Shock retook the field to defend its championship. Playing in the Pleasure Island Soccer Association in Wilmington, the Shock found itself in an unfamiliar situation: down 2-0 at halftime.
“This was a great learning opportunity for the girls,” coach Mark Giordano said. “They showed resolve and determination and a champion’s will to win.”
Mia Adcock started the comeback using her speed and dribbling skills and shot a great ball past the goalkeeper for the first score.
About five minutes later, Kayla Crouch, playing the midfielder’s position, hit a shot from outside the 18-yard line that found the back of the net and tied the game.
“It was a great shot,” Giordano said, “but the goal Kayla just missed was even more exciting. Hayley Giordano kicked a corner kick perfectly across goal and Kayla ran in and headed the ball, which then hit the top crossbar, just missing a spectacular goal.”
With the game tied, the Shock kept the pressure up with tough defense from Hope Simmons, Nicole Gibbs, Amity Croft and Leah McDonald.
“The defense just wouldn’t let the other team into their side of the field, so we were taking shots constantly in the second half,” coach Giordano said.
With about five minutes left, Ashley Oakes connected, using her left foot for the winning score.
