To the editor:
This election season represents new lows in American citizenry, if not civility, from those plastering the Oysterfest cross-street with hate-provoking signs that ridiculed President Obama while underscoring Mitt Romney’s true beliefs: “Are you a Maker 53 percent or a Taker 47 percent,” “I’ll take the Mormon over the Moron” and “Vote for the American in November” and “When someone doesn’t do their job, we have to let them go...Clint Eastwood.”
This sign was prominently displayed with a real bullet hole through it. I have photos of all. Hundreds of families shuttled to the event were directed right by these signs to catch their bus.
I grew up in highly bigoted Gary, Ind. I moved to progressively integrated societies in Toledo, Ohio, Rochester, N.Y., and Hartford, Conn.
When retiring here, I was impressed that the Wilmington area appeared to be a further progression in effective racial integration.
Regardless of party affiliation, I expect better from national leaders, as well as locally elected officials. What kind of education, leadership and citizenry are you building?
